How Our Dogs Eat

Raw Feeding Practices

Nutrition is something we care deeply about, but we also want a puppy’s transition into a new home to be simple and dependable. Our puppies are raised primarily on Royal Canin Puppy food. Before they leave us, they also begin experimenting with small amounts of raw food so that raw is already a familiar taste and texture rather than something completely new after pickup.

Our adult dogs are fed a combination of raw and freeze dried foods. We pay attention to body condition, appetite, stool quality, dental health, coat, energy, and how each individual dog responds to what he or she is eating. What works beautifully for one household may not be practical for another, so new families receive information about exactly what their puppy is eating at the time of pickup and how to make any change gradually.

We do not require a new family to switch a puppy to raw food. The priority during the transition home is that a young toy breed puppy eats consistently and reliably. Families who want to continue Royal Canin can do so, and families who later choose raw or freeze dried food can make that change gradually. Our puppies have simply had an introduction to raw before leaving so the taste and texture are not completely unfamiliar.

For families interested in learning more about pet food, ingredient sourcing, and why many owners choose to look more closely at what is in the bowl, I highly recommend watching the documentary Pet Fooled. I encourage families to research nutrition thoughtfully, ask questions, and work with a veterinarian they trust when deciding what feeding approach is best for their dog.

Because toy breed puppies have small stomachs and limited reserves, consistency matters. Young puppies need dependable access to appropriate nutrition, regular meals or feeding opportunities, hydration, and close attention during the first days in a new home. Our priority is always that the puppy eats reliably and transitions safely.

Tell us about your home

At Adored Yorkies, success is not measured on pickup day. It is measured years later, when a family tells us their Yorkie is still the little shadow following them through the house, the dog everyone wants to hold, the tiny personality that somehow became an enormous part of the family. The photograph may be what started the conversation, but that lifelong bond is what we are breeding for.

If you are looking for a Yorkie chosen only by color, size, or the first available puppy, we may not be the right breeder for you. If you are looking for a puppy raised as an individual, from dogs we know and love deeply, with thoughtful attention to health, temperament, structure, pedigree, and family fit, we would be honored to learn more about you. Our hope is not simply that you choose one of our puppies. It is that years from now, you cannot imagine your family without that dog.
